Same-Day Fixed Partial Denture

What is a fixed partial denture?

A fixed partial denture (also called a fixed bridge) is a restoration that replaces or spans the space where one or more teeth have been lost. As its name describes, a fixed partial denture does not need to be removed from the mouth for cleaning. A fixed partial denture is bonded or cemented into place — only a dentist can remove it.

Generally a bit more expensive then a removable partial denture, a fixed partial denture, when indicated may feel more stable and comfortable. A fixed partial denture also helps maintain the natural shape of your face and may help support your lips and cheeks. Your appearance, dental health and the proper functioning of your mouth all are important reasons for wearing a fixed partial denture. After a careful evaluation Dr. Wesley will determine if a fixed partial denture is right for you.

How a Fixed Partial Denture is attached?

A fixed partial denture is commonly cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the space left by the missing teeth. A false tooth (called a pontic) replaces the lost tooth. A pontic is attached to a crown, which is a restoration that covers a tooth. The two crowns and the pontic (could be one or more pontic depending on the span of missing teeth) are used together to create a fixed partial denture. Using our advanced 3D technology the crowns, can be designed and fabricated on-site, and placed over the adjacent natural teeth. The crowns serve as retainers that provide support for the fixed partial denture.

Different types of Fixed Partial Dentures:

A fixed partial denture can be attached to your natural teeth. Different types of materials may be used in a fixed partial denture. For the best possible outcome, Dr. Wesley recommends using the longest-lasting and most durable materials when fabricating a fixed partial denture. In some instances, a resin-bonded fixed partial denture, frequently called a “Maryland Bridge,” can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. Because this fixed partial denture is attached by a special procedure called bonding, it doesn’t require the use of crowns or extensive tooth preparation. Dr. Wesley will determine whether this treatment method is appropriate for you.

Alternate Solutions to a Fixed Partial Denture:

There is a more permanent solution to a fixed bridge or fixed partial denture. An implant-supported partial denture or sometimes referred to as an implant-supported bridge, may be the best solution for you. Unlike a traditional fixed partial denture and fixed bridge, an implant-supported partial denture or bridge stays secure and strong, and won’t cause problems with adjacent teeth. An implant-supported partial denture or bridge is so comfortable and natural; they’ll look and feel just like your own teeth.
